on the fly

It has certainly been one fine day. The kind that isn't planned. Isn't thought out. Completely "on the fly". Love it. I have a very sweet and dear friend from Tallahassee who lives about 5 minutes away and has two children almost the exact same ages as Ashton and Emory. I was talking with my sweet Steph this morning and mid-sentence said, "Hey! Let's go to the zoo!" She immediately said, "OK!!" So, after about 15 minutes of throwing things in bags and loading up a stroller and wagon, off we went. Our perfect plan was totally in motion until we pulled up to the zoo to, oh, about 50 buses. I am not exaggerating at all. At least 50 school buses. Not be detoured from being spontaneous, we unloaded our gear and hit the park. Park is an understatement. Picture green hills, huge fountains, baby ducks, paddle boats, playgrounds, a rehearsing orchestra and gorgeous views of downtown Houston from every angle. It was fabulous. The kids frolicked, splashed and raced. After roughly 4 hours in the sun we headed back to the cars with four hungry doodle bugs. Steph turned to me and said, "want to go the chick-fil-a?!" To which I replied, "you took the words right out of my mouth!" We are such gamers.

What do you do on a day like this?

Unless you are sassy and don't like getting wet.

In which case, you might want to stick to this.

Love days like this. Sweet excitement and fun in the sun.

fruit roll ups

A few days ago I made Darby's homemade fruit roll ups. YUM. They taste just like the real deal. And the kids love them. And, other than a little bit of sugar, they are good for them. Triple score ;) Now, if I could just get a decent picture of my two doodle bugs...
Oh, and as you can see, Ashton is still a very active little man. I promise we do not beat him.DSC_0004DSC_0008

Noculars and American Honey

Ashton discovered some "noculars" (binoculars) that our sweet neighbors left at our house last week. Yesterday they were noculars. Today, they are not so much noculars, but more an extra body part. He has not separated from them except to bathe. I had to sneak into his room last night and remove them from around his neck. When I went to retreive him this morning, they were back. He likes to look for birds. And it has really been helpful because I do not want to be surprised by any birds flying around our house.

Switching gears, I been really been loving the song American Honey by Lady Antebellum.

This picture makes me think of my favorite line.

"She grew up good. She grew up slow. Like American honey."

boo boo

Ashton seems to get one every single day. Really. I know it's normal. He's two. Bruises and scrapes are going to happen. But if this is what he looks like at two, I do not think I can handle football and baseball games. I am going to be "that" mom. The overly cautious one that jumps up and embarrasses her child every time he weebles or wobbles. I don't want to be that mom. But look...

DSC_0018

The best part is, he is always "ok". This is what he says when he falls. He jumps up (sometimes crying...and bleeding) and says repeatedly, "Ashon ok, mommy. Ashon ok." And he usually is. And so am I after I remove my heart from my throat, where it tends to jump during times of peril. So, I guess this is just the life of a boy. And the life of a mama of a boy. Sigh.

And don't worry about his little battle wounds causing him pain. He is VERY proud of every scrape, scratch, bruise and ding. His "boo boos".

Easter

We had a fabulous Easter... all things considered. "All things" would be Emory Anne's FOUR teeth that are coming in. Poor little thing. Her teeth caused a very high fever and ultimately resulted in an ear infection. Thank goodness for amazing grandparents! My parents and John's mom made the trek over from Tallahassee. We were SO escactic they were here. John's mom (Memaw) sat up most of the night before Easter with her sweet, sick, sassy grandbaby. My mom (Grammie) colored eggs with Ashton and my dad (Papa) wore Ashton and Emory out playing every day that they were here. Other than coloring eggs, we had the Grand Opening for daddy's new office complex (whole other post to come on that), dressed up to hunt Easter eggs (although E's fever prevented us from going to church), played, played, and played some more. It was just such a blessing to have them here.

FREEZE

This is what I have taught Ashton to do when he sees a car. Freeze. Do. Not. Move. He could seriously try out for the safety patrol at the tender age of 2 1/2. Traffic safety is not a joke in this little guy's opinion. However...

it is in her's.

DSC_0114

Today we were outside playing with this.
DSC_0115

While Ashton was very busy making rivers, suns and rainbows, Emory was very busy wandering into the middle of the street.
DSC_0101

We live on a culdesac, so while I am tirelessly trying to instill in her that it is dangerous and a huge no no to stand in the middle of the road, I feel relatively at ease that she will not encounter any speeding vehicles. Not Ashton.
DSC_0103

He was VERY uncomfortable with the fact that she continued to defy saftey rules. Every time Emory would strut her little self into the street, Ashton would say, "Freeze Erm-ry!" with his hand outstretched in the stop position. When this didn't work (every single time), he would sigh heavily, put down his chalk and go get her.
DSC_0107

He loves her. She loves him. And I love that fact.
